THE manager of an Irvine goods store has said it is just "nice to be nice" after her staff were commended for their treatment of a local youngster.

The Times contacted B&M in Irvine after seeing staff from the store praised on social media for making a young girls day.

The post told of how a passer-by saw that the youngster (they guessed aged around 8) was short of change while trying to buy a family member a present.

Though she claimed staff told her not to worry, and that they would take what she had and make the rest up themselves.

They said it was "nice to see staff being so thoughtful", so the Times reached out to the store on Lamont Drive to find out more.

The store's manager Ally Maclauchlan explained the situation, and the staff who should be commended for the gesture.

She told of how one of the their supervisors, Alyson Young, was helping the young girl around the shop floor as she looked to pick out a gift for her gran and mum.

Ally explained: “She didn’t have enough money for a bag, but Alison said ‘don’t worry about that we’ll give you a bag."

She added how the youngster was concerned as she didn't want either of her family members to see the gift she had chosen.

She was worried that without a bag she would have to hide the item she selected (a candle) under her jumper and "you’ll think I stole it”.

Though Alyson allayed those fears and they continued onto the till.

Ally continued: “When she got to the till she couldn't find some of her money, and she didn’t have enough, so Robert McNaught who was serving her on the till said ‘look don’t worry about that, I’ll make it up for you’.

“It looked like she was getting really upset because she couldn’t find her money.”

While Ally played the gesture down, it was clear that those who saw this were impressed, and that one young girl was leaving the store very happy.

Though Ally said it is all just part of their day to day job.

She added: “That’s one thing we take pride in, giving good service regardless of what age the person is, that’s something we are keen to do.

“I think it made her day – it’s just nice to be nice and be decent to people.”
