IRVINE’S newest councillor has welcomed plans to bring the Scottish Benefit Agency to North Ayrshire.

Councillor Louise McPhater is “delighted” with her party’s proposals to attract 300 new jobs to the region.

Last week, Councillor Joe Cullinane, leader of the Labour administration, put forward his case to bring investment to North Ayrshire which he believes would help to address issues with inequality.

The Scottish Government announced in March 2016 their intention to establish a new Benefits Agency for Scotland on the back of additional powers that have been devolved to Scotland.

Speaking this week, Councillor McPhater said: “I am delighted that our new Council Leader has decided to put forward the case for the Scottish Benefit Agency to be brought to North Ayrshire.

“One of the priority issues coming through from the new locality partnerships is work and the local economy which demonstrates that people across North Ayrshire see job creation as the key to building a better North Ayrshire.”

Councillor Cullinane added: “Choosing North Ayrshire, I believe, has the potential to make our ambitions - to create opportunities, reduce inequality and deliver an economy that works for all local residents.”
