CLASSROOMS are set to be refurbished as part of new work at Irvine Royal Academy.

The contract for work at the Sandy Road school has revealed that the third and fourth floors of the building will soon see much-needed improvement work.

This is part of £5.6million in funding - cut from an initial £8million - to upgrade Irvine Royal as well as Kilwinning and Auchenharvie Academies.

The contract was put through by the previous SNP administration with the money cut from the schools being used to plug a £2million overspend in the Health and Social Care Partnership.

Above ground drainage works, LPHW heating, domestic water services, ventilation, new lighting, telecoms and new fire alarms have all been put forward to be upgraded as part of the work.

North Ayrshire Council revealed to the Times this week that similar work will be carried out at Kilwinning and Auchenharvie Academies.

The initial funding cut was previously slammed by Labour councillors (now in administration) with newly elected Irvine West Councillor Louise McPhater saying she would fight for the “missing millions” cut from Irvine Royal.

Council Leader Joe Cullinane was part of the initial campaign to bring increased funding to Kilwinning Academy having received less capital investment than any other secondary school in North Ayrshire.

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “At the annual budget meeting, councillors agreed to allocate capital funding for Irvine Royal, Auchenharvie and Kilwinning Academies.

“The work at Irvine Royal Academy follows earlier phases of improvement work to create a joint campus with Ayrshire College.”
